EXPERIENCE: WHAT, WHY & HOW

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

Why experience?

· Makes life more enjoyable

· Learning

· Makes life more fun

My wife and I are big-time planners, and we can get frustrated when things don’t work out exactly the way that we want. Also, we often have high expectations and can often end up in situations where we are frustrated that things didn’t turn out exactly the way we thought. Sure enough, afterward we will do a deep dive and realize that although it was not exactly what we anticipated…it still turned out pretty darn great. Taking a moment to realize that these moments can make the experience more enjoyable. That way I’m not pissed at the situation, and I am learning. Maybe I should reset my expectations or maybe I was not open to something different. And again, this mindset will make me more fun to be around.

What is experience?

· Let the situation unfold

· To be present

· Release judgment

Too often, I have high expectations and want things to go a certain way. Just let it unfold. One of my friends in the past, as we were going on a trip up north to canoe and hike had said “what are we going to do today?”. I responded by stating that we are just going to let it unfold. We are together, we are in nature and were going to get some exercise. To be present as opposed to thinking “oh, it should have been this way”.

To release judgment. To stop thinking about the way you think things should be. Accept the way that it is and let it go.

How does one experience?

· Be grateful

· Breath

· Smile

Be grateful: Pretty simple, yet not always easy. If I am in a situation and it’s not going the way I expected I can still be grateful that I am sharing it with someone, or that I am outside or that this is a part of life, and I am alive to be able to have this experience.

To breathe: Too often, many of us are breathing through our mouths and it feels like fight or flight and survival mode. Things seem so urgent and breathing allows me to slow down and just take it all in and let it happen.

To smile: Life is too short. Even if things didn’t go exactly the way you thought it was going to happen-smile. You will find that it is hard to be unhappy when you are smiling.

Experience life- life is too short. Again, I am all about setting high expectations and shooting for things, but letting it happen and unfold into an experience, whether it is good or bad. Sure enough, it usually works out.

Enjoy the experience!
